Despite the hype and glamour you’ve seen about the modeling profession- it’s hard work. It can be intense and sometimes tedious but for the select few who make it, the rewards are large. Modeling is a business and being successful as a model requires dedication, work and persistence. There is no easy way to make it big but following these five steps will surely put you ahead of the game.

Self Assesment: The first step is to do some soul searching. You’ll first need to think about what type of modeling you want to do: runway, glamour, fitness, print, commercial, plus-size. Many agencies and publications specialize in a particular type of modeling, so you’ll want to figure out your niche and put together a portfolio that reflects your style.
Join Modeling Websites There are many free modeling community websites which allow you to join, create a profile, interact with other models/photographer and find work. This is a GREAT way to gain exposure and get your face in front of a massive amount of people. You should have profiles at EACH of the major modeling communities Miss Online, Model Mayhem, One Model Place).

Build a suitable portfolio: This is a very important step. Any agency you go too will want to see your portfolio. Setting up quality head shots will help them see you. Make sure they are taken with mild make-up and they are able to see your face clearly. It is important not to overdo them it will be hard for the agent to see the working template if there is too much or your face is hidden. If you don’t have one yet, dont worry. Networking with professional photographers on a modeling community website will make it easy.

Mail your photos in to Major Magazines: Find magazines that you think your look would fit in with and mail your photos in. You’ll want to be sure to send them to the right person. Look for someone with the position/title of Photo editor, featured editor or research editor. Be sure to get the name and contact info of that person and send them your photos. If you are willing to invest a few dollars, why not send them an overnight fedex? This will surely get their attention and will make you stand out from the crowd.

Be Persistent: This is important because there will be many “Rejections” in your search. Remember that people are naturally programmed to say NO at the first approach. Do not let this get to you. It takes persistence to make it as a model and you need to understand that it can take months from the first introduction to the intended action. The most successful models have heard “NO” more than any others and that’s why they’re successful today. The never quit!

Become a Model: Tips & Advise

Modeling is a very large industry. Supermodels, or highly successful models, only represent a tiny fraction of models and modeling jobs although they do attract the most attention and publicity. Many women dream of becoming a successful top model but like other creative fields such as acting and singing, the competition for model places is fierce and disappointments are many.

Fortunately, the modeling world is vast and there are opportunities for everyone regardless of age, sex, weight, height, ethnicity or skill set. Modeling jobs cover a variety of fields including fashion, art, glamour, print, web, children, family and the list goes on. Most magazines, books, television commercials and other media related fields all require models based on their own particular needs. However becoming a model is not an easy task based on looks, and looks alone. To become a successful model will require a positive attitude, the ability to accept rejection, commitment, determination, hard work and a good working relationship with their model agency.

Beginners should have their photos up on a portfolio hosting site for models. These websites are generally free to join and upload photos and can get you a lot of exposure. I would recommend having memberships and profiles at ALL 3 of the following websites:

Miss Online
Model Mayhem
One Model Place

The first two (Miss Online and Model Mayhem) are totally free. The third is mostly free but you do get constant messages to upgrade to the “gold membership” (which I don’t think is worth the money).

Miss Online doesnt censor profile pages for content. You can add links to your other modeling profiles as well as your myspace page, etc. I’d use Miss Online as the profile link to send prospective agents because it saves alot of time typing in different websites. They go to the Miss Online profile and can link to your others. Simple.

Моделирование 2.0 – Самый горячий Новый Участок Моделирования

miss-online.png

We’ve recently written about the beta version of the new Miss Online Modeling Site. (You can read the post entitled  “Best New Modeling Site of 2008).

miss-online.png

Well, the new site has been rolled out and the excitement about this new site is huge. This is the first true social networking, or web 2.0, website dedicated to female models.

Members have complete control over their experience. They can import photos directly from flickr, totally customise their modeling profile page and for those who take pictures on the run–they can send it directly from their cell phones to their Miss Online Profile page.

Unlike one model place, which restricts content pertaining to external sites, Miss Online invites it. When models sign up and create a profile, there are questions which ask to type in their OMP #, MM #, Myspace Page, etc. The creators are hoping that this strategy will lead to their website becoming the central login page for all models. Why send agents links to 10 different websites when you can just give them your Miss Online URL and all of that info is in the page.

The site is rich with user features from slideshows, to custom profile badges, widgets and, get this, MODEL TALK! They’ve just included the BETA release of Model Talk on the site. This is a chat room directly on the website where users can interact. Models can give and ask for advise from other models, or agents can discuss job details in real time with the model. No more emailing for days.

Oh, and did I mention –THE GIRLS ARE SMOKING HOT !

Lindsay Lohan as Marilyn Monroe in “The Last Sitting”

Photographs by Bert Stern

In 1962, photographer Bert Stern shot a series of photos of Marilyn Monroe that have collectively come to be known as “The Last Sitting.” Taken during several boozy sessions at the Hotel Bel-Air, the photographs are arguably the most famous images ever captured of America’s most famous actress: Monroe, sleepy-eyed and naked, sips from a Champagne glass, enacts a fan dance of sorts with various diaphanous scarves, romps with erotic playfulness on a bed of white linens. Six weeks after she had posed, Monroe was found dead of an apparent barbiturate overdose.

The photos endure partly as artifacts—as the last visible evidence of the living woman (a legacy reinforced by Stern’s decision to publish the contact sheets Monroe herself had crossed out in red marker). But the pictures are also remarkable for the raw truths they seem to reveal. In them, we see an actress whose comedic talents were overshadowed by her sex appeal, a woman who is cannily aware of her pinup status, yet is also beginning to show her 36 years. In many shots, she is obviously drunk. This was an unhappy time for Monroe. Notorious for her on-set antics, she had been publicly lambasted by Billy Wilder after Some Like It Hot, then fired from the production of Something’s Got to Give; she’d endured two recent divorces and, in 1961, a brief stint in a psychiatric ward.

MILAN FASHION WEEK

Prada: Erotica and old lace

MILAN: As the models walked down the steep runway in dresses as dark as pitch, just a nude-toned neckpiece suggesting something edgy underneath, the Prada collection seemed a world away from last season’s subversive flutter of fairies. Then came the first shot of arsenic and old lace: the lace worked in flowers, crunchy or transparent, with the kicker in the sexual charge coming literally from underneath in the case of transparent panels showing and revealing clinging underpants and alabaster white thighs.

Or there were the more familiar Prada tricks, like bra straps closing a dress over a pristine white blouse or shoes bandaged to the foot as leather petals like torn skin covered the toes.

“I still don’t understand why I like lace – but it is such an accompaniment of women, through childhood, marriage and being a widow,” Prada said backstage. She admitted that innocent white lace was not part of her fashion vocabulary. Sky blue and a flash of bright orange was the farthest the designer got from the boudoir glamour of beige lace or the mysterious darkness of a very merry widow, whose bag was even made of lace flowers.

It was a remarkable show, powerful in its presentation as the models descended the ramp, but above all original, inspiring and intensely Prada in its mix of the prim and the perverse.

Milan Fashion Week | Giorgio Armani

By Anne Christensen

The Fashion Telex: In which the editors of T: The New York Times Style Magazine file almost-real-time dispatches from the show of the moment. This week, the Telex comes from Milan’s women’s fashion week.

Anne Christensen, women’s fashion director, reporting from Milan on Giorgio Armani —

Armani opened the show today with a man in a brown velvet suit, setting a very different tone this year. The show was a mix of all his favorite international references — from the Chinese, to the Spanish, to the Indian. There were velvet harem pants, Spanish-lace shawls and more. I liked best how the collection was street ready. Lots of flats. No girls teetering high heels like the rest of the shows!”

Heidi Klum and Tyra Banks are models of success

Tuesday, February 19th 2008, 4:00 AM

A 34-year-old mother of three being named the world’s sexiest model sounds unlikely, unless that woman is Heidi Klum, who also happens to be one of the most successful global brands in the industry.

“The icon they call Heidi Inc. is no mere sexy mortal, but a force of nature. All hail!” gushed the Models.com Web site that crowned Klum top model and named TV diva Tyra Banks fourth sexiest model.

It’s no wonder these two TV titans took down the competition. Klum and Banks are more than runway strutters, they’re brands who’ve changed the face of the modeling business as we know it. “They’ve broken the mold and diversified, successfully doing things they’re actually good at,” says image consultant and former model Sandy Dumont.

In the ’90s, supermodels like Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell tried to break away from the runway with roles on the big screen. (Anyone remember Crawford’s flop, “Fair Game”? We thought not.) But Klum and Banks redefined the model slash actress cliché and instead created a platform that actually flies: model slash host.
